IS JUJUTSU KAISEN ACTUALLY GOOD? (2)

If you’re into the anime world, you would definitely have heard of Gege Akutami’s Jujutsu Kaisen. Year 2023 seemed to be quite a year for the action packed series as its view count went quite high, grabbing the attention of famous celebrities like Megan Thee Stallion, Usher, Bruno Mars and so on.

But the 64,000 dollar question remains, ‘Is Jjk actually good?’

In this post, I wish to analyse the overall content of Jujutsu Kaisen (No Manga Spoilers, okay?) and give my opinion and rating. Let’s get right into it.

Plot Analysis

The story centres around a young boy, Yuuji Itadori who swallows the finger of a 1000 year old demon called Sukuna and ends up having this evil creature live him in. Now he navigates the world of curses and sorcerers as he joins the Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical College, informally called Jujutsu High.

The start of the show seemed like every other shounen anime- a young boy gaining the powers of some devil as he joins a devil-killing organisation. But things began to kick of after a few episodes. The fights, animation and storyline are like nothing I’ve ever seen before. The writer’s ability to present a good anime without excessive fanservice and aggressive screaming (which is common in most shounen) is quite commendable. And here, we don’t have some main character fueled by his passion to be the best. No. Itadori is more concerned with ensuring everyone has a respectable death and isn’t killed brutally by a cursed spirit. Overall, the plot of Jjk is excellent.

Character Analysis

Now Jjk is rich in all sorts of characters with different personalities. We got the adorable strong MC, Itadori. The sassy confident girl crush, Nobara Kugisaki. The emo kid with daddy issues, Megumi Fuhiguro. The hot sensei, Satoru Gojo, and so on. Based on characters, I’d say Jjk is pretty average. Most of the characters are tropes used in fiction quite often.

Yet, fans go crazy every time characters like Gojo, Nanami Kento, Choso, Geto Suguru or even Sukuna is on screen. And the reason is simple. Even though these characters are tropes seen everywhere, Jjk has its way of giving them what I like to call ‘The Gege touch’.

The Gege touch is what I like to define as the way Jjk’s author adds his own special spice to his characters. This anime has a growing fandom of simps (sorry, not sorry… I am one tbh) and it is coz of the attractiveness of these characters. An example of this would be Choso, a cursed spirit who is not, in my opinion, all that attractive physically but something about the way he speaks and looks just has me hooked, for real.

And unlike most animes, where females are just an epitome of fanservice, Jjk has interesting, complex, strong, independent and inspiring females. A perfect example of that being Maki Zenin.

Though Jjk has characters that are recycled often, it adds its own little appeal and depth to said characters.

Animation

I’m not gonna spend a lot of time on this segment coz if you’ve watched at least a minute of Jjk, you’ll know that the official studio handling their animation, MAPPA, is doing an amazing job.

From Season 1 to themovie and finally Season 2, the animation just seemed to be getting better and better. And this makes watching it really… enjoyable. Animation goes a long way in influencing your audience and Jjk seems to understand just that.

Gojo Satoru

I just know a bunch of you reading have been waiting to see something extensive about this man.

For those who don’t know, Gojo Satoru is like the Levi Ackerman of Jjk- a freaking girl magnet.

Gojo is tall, hot, handsome, ‘the strongest’, rich and has such an appealing personality. I, for one, started watching Jjk because if this man right here.

But Gojo’s existence in this show has its disadvantages

  • Many characters are downplayed, even the MC. The bad thing about having such a good side character in a show is that main characters would most likely get ignored. There are far more TikTok videos with a Gojo hashtag than an Itadori hashtag. In fact, some of my friends even thought Gojo was the MC.
  • Disappointment. Gojo is not the MC, so no matter how badly you want it, his safety and continuity in the show is not assured. I’ve heard people say they’d drop Jjk if smth happens to Gojo. Well…

Overall/Conclusion

Though Jjk is a new-gen anime, it’s done quite a lot of impact in the anime world right now. Having swept this year’s Crunchyroll Awards winning about 11 trophies, it’s evident that Jujutsu Kaisen has made its mark.

It is, however, not a perfect anime. It certainly has some things to work on in

  • Romance
  • Pacing
  • World building
  • Exploration of side characters

And so on.

I’d give it an 8.5/10. Great show. Would recommend you watch.
